Ever wish you had X-ray vision for spotting dividend capture opportunities before the crowd? TradingView can do that—if you set it up the right way. Here’s my quick walkthrough.
What We’re Building (Quick Overview)
- A reusable Stock Screener that surfaces ex-dividend candidates
- A named watchlist you can refresh daily
- A clean chart layout you’ll reuse on every ticker
- Simple alerts so you don’t miss your window
Step 1 — Create / Sign In (use the web)
Open TradingView in a browser and create a free account. Important for affiliates later: sign up on the web, not the mobile/desktop app.
Step 2 — Open the Stock Screener
Bottom toolbar → Screener → Stock Screener. We’ll add a few laser-focused filters.
My Base Filters for Dividend Capture
- Ex-Dividend Date: within the next 7 days
- Dividend Yield: ≥ 4% (tune to taste)
- Market Cap: Mid or Larger (liquidity)
- Price: ≥ $5 (avoid thin, illiquid names)
- Average Volume (3m): ≥ 500k
Step 3 — Save as a Watchlist
Select results → Add to Watchlist → name it “DivCap — Ex-Div (7-Day)”. That’s your daily recon list. Re-run the screener each morning and add/remove names.
Step 4 — Load a Clean, Reusable Chart
I use a simple layout: 20-DMA, 50-DMA, Volume, and dividends annotated on the chart. Keep it minimal so your eyes find the signal quickly.
Step 5 — Add Two Alerts (Set and Forget)
- Price Pullback Alert (entry candidate): alert when price tags your pre-planned level.
- Ex-Dividend Reminder: calendar/price alert 1–3 days before ex-div.
Daily Workflow (10 minutes)
- Re-run screener; update the watchlist.
- Scan charts on Daily then 15-minute for timing.
- Set or adjust alerts.
- Prep your top 3–5 “hit list” symbols for the week.
Pro tip: Add a Notes column: dividend amount, dates, target entry/exit, and your max hold window.
